A nation-wide field of 104 players participated in the 25th annual golf tournament, hosted by the Laudium Social Golf Club (LSGC) on Sunday, Sept 11.
The tournament was held after a break of 3 years due to the COVID 19 Pandemic. A tribute was held for the players and sponsors who passed away in this period. The ELS Club –Copperleaf, a challenging inland parklands links-style course, was once again the venue for this years event.
The objective of the LSGC is to promote golf and to raise funds for the local community. Shehzaad Gooma of the LSGC told the Laudium Sun, “We are especially proud of the new number of youngsters taking up golf and especially the young local talent i.e Abdul Malik Ebrahim, Murad Hoosen and Razin Regal all vying for professional status. Revenue is collected from a combination of golfer`s entrance fee, business sponsorships, and proceeds of an auction.”
Conditions were perfect for Golf with the course in a challenging condition. The tournament again produced a first time winner. Local player Mohamed Mitha playing of a 19 handicap in the ‘B’ Division was crowned the overall champion golfer of the year with 41 stableford points. In the ‘A’ Division the winner was AC Kharbai (40 points) who also had the best gross prize of 76. Second was Ashraf Sadeck (39 points) and third position was awarded to Naeem Mohamed (37 points) Runners up in the ‘B’ Divion were Dr Imtiaz Hoosen (39 points) and Naazhim Katkhodia (39 points) Prizes were awarded for closest to the pin on all of the four par 3 holes- Mohamed Ihsaan, Mohamed Akoob, Ashraf Sadeck and Siraaj Dockrat were the victors in this category. The coveted prize for the longest drive was deservedly awarded to Razin Regal– he muscled a massive drive of 284 metres down the eighteenth fairway.
“The heart of the tournament belongs to the long list of sponsors. Their generosity makes it possible for the charities to meet some of its financial needs. It was heartwarming to see so many businesses and organizations give so openly; their contribution will certainly make a considerable difference to lives of many of the less fortunate. The Laudium Social Golf Club is a voluntary organisation and has approximately 40 members. It operates on a team basis and bears all the costs of the tournament,” Shehzaad added

Sunrise School, Laudium Mental Handicap Society, Laudium Cancer Association, Laudium Care Services for the Aged, Pretoria Child Welfare, New Beginningz and CWF (Pretoria) Bursury Fund.
In conclusion, Shehzaad said, “A very special thanks for the overwhelming response received from all contributors, which enabled the club to once again exceed the last event’s collections.
“Charity Golf was the Overall Winner- we urge all sponsors and golfers to please join us in preparation for next year`s tournament, scheduled for mid-September 2023.”
