Complaints against the local council, more so regarding officials blatantly ignoring complaints of residents, continue unabated.
Residents say that calling at the Council’s Customer Care Services office in Laudium is, most of the time, a futile exercise, as officials do not show any care for their complaints nor any care for the community.
In one of the recent complaints received by the Laudium Sun, Emerald Street resident, Choonilal Jogibhai Jhinabhai (76) said that he has had enough when it comes to poor customer service at the council’s Laudium office, as well as the failing service delivery from the council. “As a concerned citizen, I took a walk to the Laudium council office, despite the heat, last Wednesday and Thursday. I am an elderly man, so having to walk there two days in a row was difficult for me, yet I did it, because I care for the community and for a safer and cleaner Laudium. The first day I went there (Wednesday, March 10), I reported on a truck that drove past my house two days prior (Monday, March 8) causing a street light pole to bend more towards the street, making it unsafe for residents and motorists. Let me just put it straight that the staff at the local council offices aren’t the most friendly. They aren’t helpful at all, which is very disappointing. The street light electrical cable was also tugged by the truck and it is very dangerous, especially in the rain, as someone could even be electrocuted. On that same Monday people in the neighbourhood phoned the council to complain about the falling streetlight, but seeing that it was not repaired two days later, I decided to personally go to the council offices. I asked the official at customer care, to log in my request to place the electrical cable higher, as this problem has happened many times before, by other trucks and sometimes school buses, pulling down the cable. But, they were not helpful at all. Each time I have to walk to the council office and complain about the same thing. Even last October I complained. I have the reference number (460/10), but I am still waiting for them to fix it or find another permanent solution, as I care a lot about the Laudium community and the upkeep of this town.”
Choonilal added, “I then went back on Thursday (March 11) to suggest that they should run the cables in a different direction so that the height won’t be a problem for passing trucks and buses in future. I was told that I need to go to the Centurion Council office with this suggestion of mine. My question is: Why can’t this Council office in Laudium help me or note my suggestion? I am a Laudium resident and I
made a suggestion that could save the Council money, by not having to repair the cable every now and then and also to avoid further danger to residents. If the Council office in Laudium cannot help us, then why is there an office here in the first place? I do not have transport to go to Centurion and as I have mentioned before, I am an elderly man.”
Mariemuthoo (Tubby) Pillay, also of Emerald Street told the Laudium Sun, “It’s dangerous for the street pole to be falling over like this, as well as the electrical cable to be sagging so close to the road. I have contacted the council to let them know about it. I’m hoping that they will attend to it soon, or find a solution to the problem, as this has happened before.”
Councillor, Mahomed Essop responded, “The reference number can be forwarded to me and I will see to it that the relevant department deals with it accordingly. I apologize for any delays, but we are dealing with complaints one at a time.”

Emerald Street resident, Choonilal Jogibhai Jhinabhai said he has had enough of poor customer service at the Laudium Council offices.
