Monday (August 9) marks National Women’s Day 2021 and this public holiday was first officially celebrated in South Africa in 1995. The day commemorates the over 20 000 brave women who marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, to voice their protest against the country’s unjust ‘Pass Laws’. Adelaide Tambo and Maniben Sita, together with activists Helen Joseph, Sophie Williams, Lillian Ngoyi and Rahima Moosa were among the women of all races and ages, who voiced their protest against the imposition of the dompas on women, in the 1956 march.

Each year, during the month of August, also known as Women’s Month, a number of activities take place across South Africa where various sectors including business, education, political and various women’s groups, highlight the important role that women play in society. However, again this year, due to Covid-19, many of the activities will be highlighted via virtual communication. 

The Laudium Sun joins Amina Bham (office manager), Salome Mahlabe (social worker), Hafsa Carim (deputy chairperson), Rooki Soma (supervisory social worker), Tasneem Chipembere (social worker), Zainub Sathaar (HR board member) and Betty Buthane (auxiliary social worker) of the LCSA, in celebrating all our women, in each of their differing and highly contributory roles.
