The Laudium Sun, together with the Laudium Tamil Association and our readers, joins Jodi Naidoo, Shaneel Singh, Guru Emmanuel, Gwendama Pillay, Theyasha Govender, Milika Chinsamy and Yashmika Singh (front) from the Shri Kalikambal Kovil on Jacinth Street, Laudium, in wishing all Tamils observing the month of Purtassi, health, peace and spiritual upliftment.

One of the most important religious practices observed by the Tamil community, is fasting during the month of Puratassi, which is expected to commence on Sunday, September 18 and end on October 17. The month is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is also known as Narayana, Venketeshwara, Perumalswami, Strinivasa, Balaji and many other names. Devotees consider this month as one of thanks to Lord Vishnu for preserving the universe. The fast is an abstinence of eating meat, smoking, consuming alcohol and restrictions of certain pleasures. In addition, prayers to compliment these sacrifices are required, such as reciting Mantras in praise of Lord Vishnu or singing songs in his praise. Saturdays are most auspicious days during this month. In many homes where prayers are conducted, a strict Viradham (dry fast) is observed, up to the observation of the prayer. A variety of vegetarian cooked meals and various delicacies, such as Vadhai, Payasam and Kadalai, are offered to Lord Vishnu prior to the breaking of the fast. “Devotees should abstain from negative emotions, thoughts and all bad qualities and intentions that can harm others. Fasting during a holy period doesn’t just mean refraining from food and drink, it is a time of spiritual reflection, self improvement, heightened devotion and worship,” said an official of the LTA.

*Note: Prayers will be observed at the Sivan Alayam every Saturday during the month of Purtassi.
