As more and more residents face the unfortunate reality of Laudium being a crime hotspot, after falling victim to crime on an almost daily basis, police management in Laudium do not seem to be concerned about this, as it has been years since police have addressed the community regarding their concerns and fears about crime.
One of the residents highly perturbed by the crime rate in Laudium, is Yeusvinth Rama Dahya, of Citroen Street, Laudium. Yeusvinth also owns a home in Pretoria East, and often spends time with his family there, including during this past festive season in December. He told the Laudium Sun, this past Monday (Jan 17),” We were away from our Laudium home for a while, during December, as we stayed at our home in Pretoria East. We stay there quite often, especially during holiday periods. However, even though we were not staying in Laudium during the holidays, I used to come often to Laudium to check if everything was okay at our Citroen Str home. We have a gardener who also kept a check on the property. However, when I last came back on the Wednesday at around 12:30 in the afternoon, I did my normal check around the house to see if everything was okay, before I went into the house. As I walked around, I noticed my front room window was broken and the burglar bar was bent. I was shocked. I quickly screamed for my gardener and asked him if he had seen anything or if he knew what happened, but he too was in shock, because he didn’t notice anything strange prior. I then also noticed some water copper pipes missing on the outside. I went into the house from the back door, which was still locked. Upon entering I was met with another shock. Our house had been vandalized, clearly by nyaopes or petty thieves. There was not much valuable stuff there. But all our taps, copper pipes and other steel items were gone. It’s so heart breaking that we can’t even leave our home for a day and this is what happens. I didn’t want to open a case, but I had to, for insurance purposes. How is it that Laudium, which was one of the safest places to stay, where we could leave our doors open, has turned out to be one of the most unsafe places. It is time that the police take more stern action to combat crime in the area.”
