Another week and yet another complaint of nyaopes freely roaming the streets of Laudium, accused by many of seemingly having evil intentions and monitoring their next victim or target. Despite residents living in fear, with the continuous attack on homes, by unemployed and seemingly mostly nyaopes, walking the streets of Laudium, looking for opportunities to steal and harass residents for money, police have still not assured residents that they have the matter under control and more importantly that they have a plan in place, as to how they will deal with the influx of nyaopes living in Laudium parks and in abandoned houses.

Pensioner, Kulsum Carim (71) of 1st Avenue, told the Laudium Sun of her ordeal on Saturday, that took place after she left her home for a mere two hours, as per her routine each Saturday. “Normally, every Saturday, between 1:00 and 3:00 in the afternoon, I go to give my son his lunch at his work place. I think someone might have been monitoring me, as it has been my weekly pattern for a long time, to leave around that time and return after about two hours. Because, how can it be that just exactly at that time, some thieves just broke into my house? My house is at the main entrance of Laudium and the street is very busy on a Saturday afternoon, so I don’t think anyone would just take chances. It had to be someone who knew my routine and who had been watching me. My main suspicion is these nyaope guys who are always around the robot near my house, (cnr of Jewel Street and 1st Ave) begging. Someone had told me recently, that I must be careful because some other day, he saw two guys, leaving through my garage. I think it might have been these nyaopes, but I am not sure. Concerning the incident of theft, when I left to go to my son, at around 1pm on Saturday, all seemed fine. When I came back from giving him lunch, everything seemed fine, when I drove into my place, as I found the gate closed as usual. However, it was only when I got out of my car and got to my backdoor, that I found the door broken and open. It seems that the thieves entered the house, by lifting the glass sliding door. Clearly there must have been more than one thief involved, as so many items were stolen. They stole our TV, a number of shoes, including two pairs of Nike shoes, which I recently bought from London. Even our duvet, linen and sheets were missing. I think they used some of the sheets to cover and carry the TV. Then, the brazen thieves even went upstairs and stole our suitcases which had clothes in them and even other luggage. We are very traumatized by this experience, as it is the first time, that thieves managed to get into our house, since we have been living here for over 19 years. We have had incidents of petty theft from our yard, but not from inside the house. I am just glad that none of the family was at home, at the time that the thieves invaded our home. It is a frightening thought that someone can just enter your home and take whatever they want. This is daylight looting. We are not safe and protected, even though we have a fence all around our house. We are seriously considering leaving here and finding another place.”
