One of the many light poles at the Laudium Cemetery that was cut by thieves and the cables stolen.

The vandalism of about 9 pole lights at the Laudium Cemetery in the early hours of this past Wednesday (Oct 5), has left the community aggrieved.

As Muslims bury during all hours, including at night and also visit the graveyard for prayers, on certain religious nights, lighting plays an important function at the cemetery. Thieves cut the poles and stripped the electric cables, plunging the graveyard into darkness, making it difficult to conduct burials at night.

Thieves also stole cables from a number of streetlights on Bengal Street, making it about 17 pole lights in total, that were vandalized early on Wednesday morning. Yet, neither the police nor private security patrollers who were on duty at the time, spotted anything amiss. Security fencing and a number of taps have also been stolen recently, from the Cemetery.

As agreed by many, the possibility of criminals working with the police or security guards should be investigated and all security guards working in the area should be vetted. As a community, we can no longer sit with folded arms and remain silent on this grave state of affairs in Laudium. -Editor
