The joyous festival of Eid-ul-Adha signifies the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah (Saudi Arabia) and recalls the act of faith by Prophet Ebrahim (AS), who was willing to sacrifice his own son, Hazrat Ishmael (AS), for the Almighty alone. Eid-ul-Adha, or the festival of sacrifice, is one of the most important celebrations on the Islamic calendar. Qurbani is the sacrifice of a sheep, goat or cow, and Muslims across the world, practice the act of Qurbani annually, in emulation of the beloved Prophet Ebrahim (AS). Devotees are encouraged to develop a bond with the intended sacrificial animal- to add depth to the sacrifice that will follow and then distribute most of the meat to friends and the poor.
The Laudium Sun wishes all our readers, who will be celebrating, a peaceful and safe Eid-ul-Adha on Wednesday (July 21). May your day be bountiful and spiritually uplifting and may your sacrifices during these trying Covid-19 times, be a source of great reward for you.
**For the second year in a row, Muslims from all over the world including South Africa, were not allowed into Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj pilgrimage, due to Covid-19. Only 60, 000 pilgrims from within Saudi, will be performing Hajj, this year.
