Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has announced that this years local government elections will take place on November 1, 2021.
“After consultation with the IEC, we have come to the determination that this year’s Local Government Elections will be held on the 1st of November 2021. This is in in accordance with the Constitution, read with the Municipal Structures Act, as the Act prescribes that elections must be held within 90 days after the conclusion of a five-year term of local government.”
A voter registration weekend will be held on the 18th and 19th of September 2021.
The announcement comes after the Constitutional Court handed down an order on Friday which dismissed the IEC’s urgent application for the postponement of the elections to next year.
The date of the elections will be officially proclaimed on the 20th of September, after the voter registration weekend.
“We will officially proclaim this date on the 20th September 2021, after the voter registration weekend.”
Readers are also reminded that the IEC has launched an online voter registration facility allowing new voters to register and existing voters to update or amend their registration.
