No games after thieves steal Playstation and other items

Crime on Agra Street continues to be of great concern to residents in the area, who have been appealing to the council, for a long time, to find a permanent solution concerning the open water canals opposite their homes. Residents say that thieves are using the canal as a quick escape route, and also to monitor their movements, before striking.
In a recent incident, last Thursday, a home was invaded by thieves whilst the family members were asleep. Jonathan Naidoo, of Agra Street West, told the Laudium Sun, “On Thursday night my family and I went to bed late and everything seemed normal. However, when we woke up early on Friday morning, we were shocked to realize that our home had been burgled. I cannot believe that whilst we were asleep there were criminals inside our home, helping themselves to our things. Besides it being a gross invasion of privacy, our lives were also at risk. The irony is that on the one hand I am so upset that our home was invaded by thieves, but on the other hand I am just grateful that none of my family members were harmed and that we slept through this ordeal. We are normally light sleepers, but strangely none of us heard anything during the night. I have heard that the thieves spray something to keep people asleep. I am not sure if that’s what they did with us. They stole a big TV and other items including a Playstation, so I am sure that it was more than one person that entered our home. I know crime is high in our area, that is why we have high palisade fencing in front of our house and high walls all around, yet they entered our property. This is a shock to us as we have recently taken extra measures to keep our place safe, after a car battery was stolen. We will now have to look at other measures to increase safety here. The thieves forced open one of our room windows, which tells me that it must have been someone small in size, who intruded our home. Our pedestrian gate lock in front, leading into the yard, was found broken. Our lives here in Laudium are not protected. We are not safe anymore. How can we live like this? Why are people still allowed to be on the streets during the curfew time? I have opened a case and just hope our items that were stolen will be recovered by the police. I appeal to the community to please not buy goods from anyone who cannot produce his/her ID and receipt from where they bought the goods. I also appeal to the council to close the water canal running opposite our homes, as it is being used by thieves who make a quick getaway and also to hide there. The fencing around it is mostly stolen, so that did not work”
Busisiwe Maja, a tenant at the Agra Street West home, said, “This is not the first time that thieves came onto the property. They came before, I think about three weeks ago and they stole a car battery. I don’t understand how they managed to come into the yard. I came here to stay because I thought it is quite a secure area and that the property is safe. These thieves will always find a way to steal. It is strange that when they came this time, we did not hear any sound. Maybe they burnt something to make us sleep.”
Sergeant Simon Chokoe, of the Laudium SAPS said, “A case of burglary has been opened and the investigation is under way. I urge residents who might have any information that will assist police officers in the investigation to come forward. No arrests have been made yet.”
