Diwali/Deepavali is one of the most celebrated of all Hindu festivals and has both religious and cultural significance. In addition it has traditions related to certain language groups within the broader Hindu community. However, what is central to all is the victory of good over evil. In addition, the period exemplifies light over darkness. The lighting of fireworks ushers in that tradition. Deepavali exemplifies a caring value system where families and friends find time to celebrate togetherness and kindle happiness.
Dr Murthi Sooboo of the PTL said, “It’s most appropriate to share this goodwill period with members of our broader community irrespective of religious affiliation. So in that context, Annadanam, Pretoria Tamil League, Laudium Tamil Association and ‘Making a Difference’ have made hampers to share with less fortunate members of the community. We have collectively made over 250 hampers of basic food items that are traditionally used over this period. We take the opportunity to wish our community, our sponsors and all our recipients the very best during this auspicious period of Deepavali. We wish prosperity, love and happiness.

This year, Diwali/Deepavali will be celebrated on Monday (October 24), with the predominantly Gujarati community also celebrating New Year the following day.
