Newly elected Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, was in Laudium this past Monday (Oct 10) in support of World Cane Day (WCD), which was hosted by the Community of Laudium and ‘The Garden Social Services.’
This awareness program is held annually throughout the world and WCD is an awareness walk affording people the opportunity to understand the importance of the White Cane, used by the Visually Impaired.
Chairlady of the ‘The Empowerment Centre for the Blind,’ in Hamanskraal, Tsakani Chauke, told the Laudium Sun, “The Centre is amongst the 27 Centres of ‘The Garden Social Services,’ whereby the Visually Impaired are empowered through sewing cushions and other items. We are overjoyed and happy with the reception and love we received on WCD, in Laudium. We felt the energy of knowing that we belong to this Universe.”
Founder of the ‘Garden Social Services,’ Moulana Abubakr Chouglay told the Laudium Sun, “With the help of the Almighty and the community, we are able to undertake various programmes, including co-ordinating projects of building self-confidence within the visually impaired.”
Ambassador of ‘The Garden Social Services’, Maymoona Chouglay told the Laudium Sun, “Some of the themes on our posters which were displayed on WCD in Laudium read… ‘Respect us, we also have feelings.’ ‘Please talk to us, we are not deaf.’ ‘We are able in another way,’ and had a phenomenal impact on those in attendance. ‘The Garden Social Services’ has reached out to bring a change to the life of the Visually Impaired. We request you and your children to join this effort of uplifting the Visually Impaired where possible. We want to thank all those who made this day, ‘World Cane Day,’ a reality in Laudium. It is important that the community is aware that we may not be able to see, but we can feel.”
